XFCE looks good, is as configurable as GNOME and even faster and more lightweight than gnome. I have no complaints and it does everything I need it to and nothing that would annoy me.
It’s not a sexy selling point, but Xfce really isn’t annoying. It’s simple and respectful of user preferences. It’s not super edgy, but it provides a simple and solid user experience.
Unity is showing a lot of users the value of those kinds of qualities in a desktop.
