There was almost a native AIM client for Linux:

AOL’s resistance was palpable when [Eric] Bosco and some colleagues released an open-source messenger for Linux. The company was furious.
“AOL was very much anti-open source,” Bosco said.

It’s interesting how Linux is still around and AIM isn’t.
