I’ll continue being a Linux desktop user. For me, as a power user’s power user, it’s the best of all operating systems. But for most people, Linux will never be a drop-in replacement for macOS or Windows.
I like and respect Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols, but I disagree with the premise of this article. Something doesn’t have to be popular to be successful. Desktop Linux works incredibly well. It’s an amazing tool for lots of people, many of whom you can read about here. Where is the failure? Is success defined just by “beating” Windows and OS X?
When I use Linux, all I see is success.

Agreed. Very happy Linux desktop user here. Don’t really care what other people do. To each to his own.

Started using Linux in 2014 with Ubuntu 14.04 and Unity. I had just built my gaming dream machine complete with Windows 8.1
For some reason I felt compelled to try Ubuntu, so I installed it on my disused 2005 Athlon64x2, and I was hooked… Spent less time
gaming and more time learning and creating… Got me back into graphics and web design, and started me into “video podcasting”, music production,
and video editing. Now that gaming computer runs Arch, I have an ESXi host full of Linux VMs, Two Elementary OS laptops, a Raspberry Pi running Nextcloud,
And my Xeon workstation running Ubuntu 18.04. I make huge changes to all these systems and never have crashes..Total success.
