This is a brief history of RSS, which I love. Like many, I wish RSS had caught on. However, I’m not sure it’s the answer to the problems of filter bubbles. Despite that caveat, I think it’s way better than social media, which is controlled by algorithms only a select few understand.
RSS is still around and I think with the right client or web tool, it could make a come-back. I’m not ready to give up. It’s just too convenient a way to get the information you want pushed to you.

This leaves me puzzled. RSS was huge and is big. It is manageable like email.

I use RSS a lot. I had been using QuiteRSS, but lately it is crashing. I found newsbeuter which is a console program I’m liking a lot. I can go through the feeds quickly after learning the keystrokes. All I get is the text that is the same as that presented in QuiteRSS, but no images. If I am interested in the article, like this one, I press ‘o’ and my browser is opened to view the whole post. This really speeds up things. The learning curve was not much and well worth the simplicity and speed with only minor differences from Mutt’s keystrokes which causes me to get no results with things like ‘delete’. 🙂
BTW, I was catching you on G+, but with that going away I got the bright idea of RSS for your Blog.

Funnily enough I am just migrating some sites I follow from Google+ to RSS. G+ was a convenient way to check for updates and leave quick comments, but it is shutting down very soon. I was still following a lot of blogs using Feedy and so I’ll expand my follows there, including this site. I don’t actually maintain my own blogs these days as I didn’t have enough readers to justify it. I’m mostly on the Steem blockchain now where there’s a good community. It’s sad that RSS is less known now, but many people never go beyond social media. I did like having total control over my blog.

For me RSS never went away, it is how I navigate the web. If you don’t have an RSS feed on your site chances are I’ll never come back to it.
I guess in a way twitter and other social media sites do a similar job of alerting you to new content, but I think I’ll always prefer my original way.
